Understanding the Ashtanga method takes many years of dedicated practice. At The Green Room School of Yoga, it is our mission to bring Ashtanga yoga in its purest and most honest form to our students. It is also our mission to serve our students as they learn Ashtanga yoga. We assist our students in creating a strong and stable practice foundation, which will in turn lead to greater strength, stamina, and flexibility. Through the Ashtanga practice, we believe that each student may find greater health, clarity and inner peace, leading to a happy life. Mindful teaching enables true progress on all levels, and enables the student to make smart and healthy choices about their yoga practice.

Our teachers are required to study and practice for a minimum of 2 years with an AYRI-authorized or certified instructor, and to attend classes at the AYRI in Mysore, India for a minimum of one month (or to regularly attend Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy's classes when they are in the US or abroad). (Note: Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is the founder and director of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India (known as "AYRI"). Please visit our Ashtanga Yoga Page for more information on Ashtanga Yoga and the AYRI, or visit our Events page to link to the AYRI in Mysore, India). We also require our instructors to maintain a daily practice under the guidance of an authorized or certified AYRI teacher. Welcome to our school! (Please visit our FAQ page for more information about mysore classes and our program).

Your Instructor: Ariana Vugrek is a dedicated student and teacher of Ashtanga yoga. She studies with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Rangaswamy, and family, at the AYRI in Mysore, India and in New York City. Ariana began her exploration of Ashtanga yoga with Beryl Bender Birch in 2001, and has attended workshops and clinics with senior Ashtanga teachers including Nancy Gilgoff and David Roche. Ariana also participates in Manju Jois' week-long Ashtanga intensives when he is teaching in New York. Ariana attended her first Mysore class in 2002 with Greg Nardi. After Greg moved out of state, she practiced for a period of time with Guy Donahaye at the Ashtanga Yoga Shala in NYC (a US branch of the AYRI). In 2003, Ariana began studying with Christopher Hildebrandt, with whom she studied for 2 1/2 years. Ariana currently studies with Zoe Slatoff. Since 2002, Ariana has studied and practiced exclusively with AYRI-authorized or certified instructors. In addition to teaching at The Green Room, Ariana teaches in New York City as a substitute Led Ashtanga instructor.

While in India, Ariana studied the Bhagavad Gita in the traditional call and response method, and Sanskrit language and chanting. In the States, Ariana has studied Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, also in the Sanskrit call and response method. As an adjunct faculty member at Drew University, she taught a graduate-level course entitled "The Science of Yoga". Ariana's dedication to her students, and to teaching, is evident to those who practice with her. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears".
